Conservation Project:

Devote your precious time and skills in restoring the fast depleting forests in Nepal by joining this perfect conservation project. You will work in a village-based nursery in Rampur, Chitwan that is growing trees and various other plants in order to protect the delicate the local environment.

Duties in the nursery include seed collection, pruning, weeding, trimming, seed sowing, mulching, tree plantation, care of small seedlings, watering of plants, etc. Some other nursery related activities like fencing, bed preparation etc. can also be carried out simultaneously.  The nursery produces seedlings that are later distributed for free to local schools, communities, and villagers for planting in community fields. Volunteers’ efforts and contributions will create a positive impact on nature and promote environmental conservation. To create awareness among the people for healthy environment

AIMS OF THE PROJECT

Rampur Multi-purpose Trees Species Nursery plays an instrumental role in promoting healthy environment. At the same time, the project has also been providing training to local farmers and people for protecting the environment. Besides this, we have been distributing saplings to the local community in order to encourage tree plantation.

PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES

The nursery is located in Chitwan, which is roughly 120 km away from the capital Kathmandu in the southern part of Nepal. It is located in a distance of about 30 km from RCDP’s Chitwan office. The nursery consists of varieties of plants like multi-purpose tree species, China Berry, Silk Cotton, Ipil-ipil, Shisham, Bamboo, etc., fruits like Litchi, Mango, Jackfruit, etc., and flowers like Bougainvillea, Croton, Hibiscus, Gardenia, etc. The purpose of the nursery is to produce seedling and distribute them to local farmers and partners, including planting them in the conservation areas. At the same time, the project has also been providing training to local farmers and partners for protecting the environment. The nursery has a local coordinator who manages the plants and other necessary materials in the nursery.

Rampur Multi-purpose Trees Species Nursery is being run by a local community in Chitwan.

REQUIREMENTS TO BE MET BY VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, should be reliable and show eagerness as well as be able to maintain their motivation. Volunteers need to also show creativity and initiative while taking part in the project. Most importantly, volunteers need to have confidence in their work, and have time and management skills to ensure an effective support.

TASKS OF VOLUNTEERS

  • To collect the seeds, place them in right order, and plant them
  • Create fences around the conservation areas and nurseries
  • Water the plants and saplings
  • Weeding, mulching and sowing
  • Landscaping, transplanting
  • Search for seedlings
  • If possible run some conservation and environment protection projects

Awareness classes for the local community people in coordination with local RCDP staff.

NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS IN THE PROJECT

Maximum 4 volunteers can be engaged in this project. Volunteers need to check with the hosting organization in advance to see if the project is still available.

HOST SITUATION

Volunteers will stay with the local host family and share rooms with volunteers from other countries participating in the same program.

Lunch & dinner are provided by the local host family. Food is prepared in local style. The main types of food will be rice, lentil soup and vegetables, but once a week the host family will provide you meat in your lunch or dinner. For vegetarians the choice is usually limited to rice, vegetables, lentil soup and pickle.
